Swange is an urban dance style of the Tiv ethnic group in central Nigeria. Swange is rooted in Tiv traditional rythms and dance steps, but had evolved in urban settings with a freer expression and improvisation, creating a more eclectic sound boosted by the addition of the traditional trumpet associated with the Hausa. The result is rousing, swaying dancers, players and listeners all at once.
This short video shows a troupe playing at the Arts Village, Abuja, but without the accompaniment of dancers.
